PARIS: A white French armed man who opened indiscriminate fire at a Kurdish cultural center in the French capital Paris killing 3 people admitted that he was racist, Western media reported on Saturday. The incident happened on Friday at 10th district of Paris which is home to a large Kurdish population in France. Sources said that the attacker told the investigators that he is racist.
French President
French President Emmanuel Macron issued directives to the Paris police head to hold a meeting with the leaders of the Kurdish people on Saturday. He said that the Kurds in Paris have been the target of an attack.
The armed man has a history of racist violence and targeted the Kurdish cultural center. He was arrested before entering a salon in Paris. The Kurdish Democratic Council in France (CDK-F) said that three people including a woman killed in the attack. Police also confirmed the death casualties in the attack.
The Kurdish culture center, known as Centre Ahmet Kaya, is run by a charity that arranges concerts and assists the Kurdish diaspora in France. The Kurdish community announced to hold a protest in Paris on Saturday.
French Minister
Interior Minister of France Gerald Darmanin said that Kurdish protesters clashed with policemen after the attack as police used tear gas to disperse them. The minister said that police were deployed to protect them.
The armed man has been identified as William M. He has a history of weapons offences and had been released on bail earlier. Kurds are spread across Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran and are a Muslim ethnic group.
