PARIS: French public sector workers, represented by the CGT union federation, are set to strike during the July-August Paris Olympics.
CGT chief Sophie Binet emphasized the need for addressing vital questions regarding overtime work, lodging, and childcare facilities, stating that current concerns have not been adequately addressed.
The strike notice will encompass various sectors, including central and local government employees, as well as medical and social workers. Binet highlighted the challenges faced by workers during the Games, such as overtime demands and restrictions on time off, and raised concerns about housing arrangements for workers traveling to the Paris region and childcare arrangements during school holidays.
The announcement comes in response to a previous call for a “social truce” during the Olympics, which was not supported by the CGT. Instead, the union is seeking a meeting with Prime Minister Gabriel Attal to discuss workers’ concerns.
While some public sector workers, such as police in the Paris region, have been promised bonuses, details on support for other workers remain unclear. Talks have begun in various fields to address compensation for overtime and missed holidays, including negotiations involving hospital and transport workers.
The planned strike underscores the importance of addressing the social conditions and welfare of workers involved in the Paris Olympics, ensuring fair treatment and support during the event.
