PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron has strongly condemned the recent coup in Niger, describing it as “completely illegitimate” and a “profoundly dangerous” development for the entire Sahel region.
The coup has left the elected leader, President Mohamed Bazoum, confined to his residence by his own presidential guard since Wednesday.
Niger’s government had been viewed as a critical ally in the fight against Islamist militancy in the volatile Sahel region, where security challenges persist. The coup has raised concerns among Western powers about the stability and security of the region.
France’s Role in Countering Terrorism in Niger
France, which has 1,500 soldiers stationed in Niger, plays a crucial role in countering terrorism in the area. The overthrow of President Bazoum’s government could potentially impact the future deployment of French troops in the country.
President Macron, currently on a visit to Papua New Guinea, emphasized the importance of restoring constitutional order in Niger. He pledged support for regional organizations like the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in mediating and considering sanctions against the coup leaders.
