BEIJING: French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen landed in Beijing on Wednesday for a three-day visit focussed on dissuading China from backing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and strengthening ties with the crucial trade partner.
The two leaders are due to meet the Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss the Ukraine war and the future of Beijing’s ties with France and the EU.
Macron, who is accompanied by a delegation of more than 50 CEOs, will also meet with the French business community during the trip.
Macron speaks to Biden ahead of China visit
Ahead of the visit, Macron and US President Joe Biden discussed the Beijing trip over a phone call, the French President’s office said on Wednesday.
The leaders discussed a way to engage Beijing to hasten the end of the war in Ukraine.
Von der Leyen EU landed in Beijing shortly after Macron. It is her first visit to China since becoming European Commission president over three years ago, with all diplomatic meetings taking place online amid Beijing’s strict pandemic controls.
China is officially neutral on the Ukraine war but has backed Russia economically and diplomatically in the wake of Western sanctions.
