French Envoy to Niger Returns to Home

PARIS: France’s envoy to Niger arrived in Paris on Wednesday, after weeks of tensions with the post-coup government in the African nation. The Niger military leaders asked the French envoy to leave the country.

In a statement, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the country’s Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna met Ambassador Sylvain Itte “to thank him and his team members for his services in the difficult situation.

French Envoy to Niger Returns to Home

The return of the French envoy comes 60 days after a military coup in Niger deposed a pro-Paris president and provoked a souring in ties between France and Niger, with new military rulers of Niger demanding the departure of the ambassador.

Earlier on Sunday, France’s President Macron announced in a TV interview that the envoy would leave the African country soon.

Niger’s military regime on Sunday lauded the announcement that the French government will pull its forces out of the African country by the end of the year as “a fresh step towards sovereignty”.
