ISLAMABAD: The French Embassy in Pakistan on Thursday celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
French Ambassador in Islamabad Nicolas Galey recalled the significance of December 10, 1948, when 58-member states of the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This marked the inception of the first legal document affirming the universal protection of fundamental human rights.
Ambassador Galey underscored the historical support of Pakistan and France for this milestone initiative. He shared a speech by French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna on UN Human Rights Day, emphasizing France’s unwavering commitment to the defense and promotion of human rights.
France expressed its dedication to combating impunity and discrimination and championing women’s rights. The Ambassador highlighted France’s contributions at the Generation Equality Forum in 2021, where over $40 billion was mobilized for the health, education, and economic empowerment of women.
Additionally, France secured re-election to the Human Rights Council for a new three-year term, with the French Foreign Minister announcing an increase in the country’s contribution to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
Ambassador Galey commended Pakistan for its steadfast commitment to safeguarding the rights of all citizens in alignment with the Constitution of Pakistan, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and international instruments ratified by Pakistan. He acknowledged legislative advancements in support of women’s rights and transgender individuals, praising Pakistani civil society for its efforts in advancing human rights.
