LAHORE: The initiative to provide free Wi-Fi services in public areas seems to have been restored throughout Punjab following the announcement by Newly elected Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, local media reported on Thursday.
The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has been tasked with executing the free Wi-Fi project, with reports suggesting that the previous infrastructure, including hotspots, will also be reinstated. The objective of the project is to furnish free Wi-Fi access in public spaces such as educational institutions, hospitals, bus stops, and railway stations. Furthermore, there will be endeavours to identify and designate new hotspot zones to improve Wi-Fi accessibility for the public.
Initially, the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) was responsible for providing and maintaining facilities for the people when the project commenced. Nevertheless, the Provincial Technology Board, PITB, has now been assigned the responsibility of offering free Wi-Fi service in public places. The reinstatement of this service is expected to benefit the public by providing internet access in crucial areas, promoting connectivity, and facilitating communication.
