PARIS: France’s newly appointed foreign minister, Stephane Sejourne, emphasized the unwavering support of his country for Ukraine during his first official visit abroad, choosing Kyiv as the destination amidst renewed Russian strikes.
The visit took place as Ukraine faced another wave of overnight attacks, highlighting the urgency of the situation as the war with Russia approaches its second anniversary.
Arriving in Kyiv, Sejourne affirmed, “Despite the multiplying crises, Ukraine is and will remain France’s priority.” He underscored that fundamental principles of international law, European values, and the security interests of France were at stake in Ukraine.
France Assures Ukraine of Continued Support
Sejourne, 38, who lacks a professional diplomatic background unlike his predecessor Catherine Colonna, had previously pledged continued support. Amid concerns that Kyiv could be overlooked amidst other international conflicts, Sejourne assured, “Russia hopes Ukraine and its supporters will get tired before it does. We will not falter.”
While allies grapple with securing funding, with EU aid and US Congress decisions pending, Sejourne expressed France’s commitment to Ukraine. France’s military support to Ukraine, amounting to 3.2 billion euros, includes providing artillery and air defense means. Sejourne announced a new phase of defense cooperation aiming to strengthen Ukraine’s capacity to produce weapons domestically.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba praised Sejourne’s “important” visit and courage in the face of ongoing Russian strikes. The ministers discussed the further supply of systems and missiles to protect Ukraine’s sky, as well as the supply of drones.
