PARIS: France’s junior minister for the digital economy Jean-Noel Barrot said that Apple should stop selling its iPhone 12 model in the country because of its high radiation levels. The minister expressed these views during an interview with the newspaper Le Parisien on Tuesday.

The minister said the country’s regulator ANFR notified the Apple firm of its decision to halt iPhone 12 sales following it had conducted tests which demonstrated the smartphone’s Specific Absorption Rate was higher than legally permitted.  However, Apple did not yet comment on the matter.

The minister said that Apple is likely to reply within 14 days.  The EU has set safety limits for Specific Absorption Rate values associated with exposure to mobile phones, which could increase the risk of cancer, scientific studies suggest.

The French will now pass on its findings to watchdogs in other EU nations. In 2020, France enhanced regulations asking retailers to display the radiation value of cell phones, tablets and other electronic devices.
