PARIS: In the aftermath of the recent coup in Niger, France has expressed concern over the safety of its embassy in Niamey.
The French foreign ministry has urged the country’s new junta to “fully guarantee” the security of their diplomatic outpost as planned protests are set to take place in the capital on Thursday (today).
The situation has escalated following the coup by the elite presidential guard, which has sparked demonstrations against Niger’s former colonial ruler and long-standing ally, France. The unrest reached a tipping point when a violent protest erupted outside the French embassy in Niamey, resulting in the shattering of windows and anti-French slogans being chanted by the crowd.
In response to these alarming developments, the French foreign ministry has made an official request to the Nigerian authorities. They have asked the security forces to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of the embassy premises and the diplomatic personnel. France highlighted that safeguarding foreign diplomatic rights of way and personnel is not only an imperative obligation under international law but is also in accordance with the Vienna Convention.
As a result of the escalating tensions and potential threats to its citizens, France has already taken decisive action. Paris conducted a successful evacuation operation on Tuesday, safely repatriating nearly 1,000 people. This group predominantly consisted of French citizens but also included other foreign nationals.
The situation underscores the delicate nature of diplomatic relations between the two nations and raises concerns about the potential consequences of political instability in the region. France and Niger share historical ties, and any disruption in their relationship could have far-reaching implications.
Niger’s new junta faces the challenging task of ensuring peace and stability in the country while also addressing the grievances and demands of its people. The international community will be closely monitoring the developments in Niger and how the situation unfolds.
