TUNIS, Tunisia: Four individuals have been sentenced to death, while two others have received life imprisonment for their involvement in the assassination of Tunisian opposition leader Chokri Belaid in 2013, revealed the deputy public prosecutor of the anti-terrorist judicial division on Wednesday.

Chokri Belaid, a prominent leftist figure and vocal critic of the ruling Islamist party Ennahdha at the time, was fatally shot outside his residence, sparking widespread condemnation and unrest.

A total of 23 individuals were charged in connection with the murder, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for Belaid’s assassination.

The verdicts delivered a range of sentences, with punishments ranging from two to 120 years for various defendants, while five individuals were acquitted of the charges.

The sentencing underscores the Tunisian government’s commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring accountability for acts of violence, particularly against political figures critical of the establishment.
