MADRID: Emergency services said on Sunday that at least four people were killed and three wounded Sunday following a train hit them as they were trying to cross a railway line in Catalonia, Spain.
The accident occurred when seven people tried to cross the railway line in Montmelo around 20 kilometres north of Barcelona, emergency services wrote on social media.

“The officials searched for other possible victims near the accident site but did not find any others. The rescue workers helped evacuate the site and take the wounded to ambulances,” the local firefighting force said in a statement.
Spain’s Minister for Transport Raquel Sanchez offered her deep condolences to the families of the victims and also expressed her strong support via social media for the rescue workers dealing “with this very tough situation.”

The chief of the regional government, Pere Aragones, stated he was “totally distressed” by the disaster.
In a statement, he said that the emergency services are doing their work and offering complete support to the victims’ families. He further said that police are probing the causes of the deadly accident.
