GUWAHATI, India: Four cricketers from Assam have been suspended following corruption allegations during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025 in Lucknow. The players—Amit Sinha, Ishan Ahmed, Aman Tripathi, and Abhishek Thakuri—are accused of attempting to influence their fellow team members, prompting an investigation by both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and a formal police complaint.
The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) announced the immediate suspension of the players, stating that the decision was made to prevent further complications. ACA Secretary Sanatan Das confirmed that the suspended players are barred from participating in any state-level cricket events, including club matches, coaching, umpiring, or officiating. The ACA has instructed district associations to enforce this suspension.
Evidence of misconduct
An FIR was filed with the Crime Branch in Guwahati, accusing the players of attempting to manipulate their teammates during Assam’s participation in SMAT 2025, which took place from November 26 to December 8.
The BCCI’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) conducted an inquiry and found prima facie evidence of misconduct.
The suspension comes after Assam’s team failed to qualify for the Super League stage of the SMAT 2025, adding further scrutiny to the squad. The ACA has assured that these measures are aimed at maintaining the integrity of the team while the investigation continues.
Das highlighted the severity of the misconduct, stating that it compromised the integrity of the sport, and stressed the need for immediate action. The ACA has also alerted clubs and cricket academies to comply with the suspension.
