BEIJING: At least four people have been killed and 10 others missing after severe storms swept through southern China, reported by state media on Monday.

The torrential downpours, affecting the expansive province of Guangdong, have prompted the evacuation of tens of thousands from affected areas.

The heavy rainfall in recent days has led to swelling rivers, sparking concerns of significant flooding described by state media as a once-in-a-century event.

According to local authorities cited by Xinhua, three fatalities occurred in Zhaoqing City, with the fourth being a rescuer in Shaoguan City.

Search and rescue operations persist in the region as efforts continue to locate the missing individuals, as stated by Xinhua. Over 110,000 residents have been relocated across Guangdong in response to the unfolding situation.
