ISLAMABAD: Former Paris-Saint-Germain and Cameroon midfielder Modeste M’Bami has died aged 40 after suffering a heart attack.
He won two Coupes de France with PSG, in 2004 and 2006, as well as an Olympic gold medal with Cameroon at the 2000 Sydney Games.
PSG expressed grief on the death of its former player and offered condolences to his family.
Added name to Cameroon’s football history with ‘golden goal’ at 2000 Olympics
At the 2000 Olympics, M’Bami added himself to Cameroonian footballing history after scoring a “golden goal” in extra time to secure victory for the Indomitable Lions’ over Ronaldinho’s Brazil in the quarterfinals.
M’Bami who started his career at Académie Kadji Sport, followed by Dynamo Douala in Cameroon, joined PSG in 2003 where he played for three seasons.
Later, he spent three seasons at French side Olympique de Marseille, which was among those paying tribute to the Cameroonian, expressing its “great sadness.”
The footballing community from all over the world – including former teammates and FIFA President Gianni Infantino – paid tribute to the deceased footballer.
After retiring at the age of 35, he returned to his country and organized recruitment days for footballers in Africa.
