Former Pope Benedict XVI dies at 95

ISLAMABAD/VATICAN: Former pope Benedict XVI died aged 95 due to worsening health conditions.

In a statement, Vatican said that Benedict’s health deteriorated in the last hours due to his age as doctors constantly monitored his condition.

Pope Francis also visited Benedict at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery in Vatican City after the audience.

Benedict lived in The Vatican, after he ceased being Pope in 2013 and was the first pope to have resigned from the top slot in the 600 years of the papacy.

The former pope had become sick and frail in recent years after dedicating his post-papacy life to prayer and meditation.

Before pope Benedict became the Holy Father, popes had headed the Catholic Church for hundreds of years until their demise.

On 11 February 2013, Benedict’s shocked the Catholic world after he announce to stand down and forced the Catholic church to grapple with an event it had nvever seen in 600 year of papcy.

He said he wanted to resign as he no longer had the physical and mental strength to run the church.

Pope Benedict led the Catholic Church for less than eight years, until in 2013, he became the first pope in 600 years to resign since Gregory XII in 1415.
The former pope spent his last years at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery within the walls of the Vatican.


His successor and current Pope Francis earlier said that he had visited him there frequently to inquire about his health.
