ISLAMABAD: Serious concerns have emerged surrounding the death of former Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) Governor Satyapal Malik, with reports suggesting that his death may not have been natural.
Speculations are intensifying over possible involvement or negligence by the Indian government. Family members, past interviews, and his final social media activity have raised disturbing questions.
Final tweet
Satyapal Malik’s final tweet read: “Whether I live or not, I will tell the truth to the nation. I am under immense pressure from the government—bribery and threats continue unabated.”
Observers are questioning whether Malik’s open defiance and criticism of the Indian government contributed to his death. It is being speculated that his refusal to stay silent and his final interviews may have led to fatal consequences.
There are reports that the former governor was under constant pressure from the Indian government to remain silent about its IIOJK policies.
“No issue with corruption”
In his last interviews, he made serious allegations, including: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has no issue with corruption and that the Modi government practices religious discrimination against Muslims.
Malik reportedly spent his final days in a basic government hospital, where his heart and kidney conditions were allowed to worsen. Despite being under treatment for several months, he continued to resist government pressure.
In 2023, an unofficial ban was reportedly placed on Malik from giving interviews.
“Forced to remain silent”
In one of his last recorded interviews, he revealed: “I was told at the last moment about the removal of Article 370. The Delhi government forced me to remain silent.” He added that on August 5, 2019, the day Article 370 was revoked, he was used as a “rubber stamp” by the BJP:
“I was taken into confidence just one night before and made to stay silent. I had no authority.”
Malik also stated that he was told not to comment on the Pulwama attack.
“Modi told me to remain silent on the matter,” he claimed.
Serious allegations
According to family members, Malik was under severe pressure from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), politically isolated, and deeply distressed over being used like a “tissue paper” by the government. He reportedly received verbal threats warning of consequences if he spoke out, and the mounting pressure led to significant psychological stress, which contributed to the deterioration of his heart and kidney health. The actions taken in IIOJK had become a burden on his conscience, further compounding his emotional and physical decline. Following a sudden and sharp deterioration in his health, his kidneys failed, raising suspicions about the true cause of his death.
Questions remain
Questions remain about the circumstances surrounding Malik’s death: Was a former governor denied proper medical care and treatment in a basic government hospital? Is it a coincidence that he died on August 5—the sixth anniversary of Article 370’s abrogation—or was it a message from the Modi government to its critics? Is it merely chance that the person who announced Article 370’s abrogation died on the same date? Was Malik politically exploited by the BJP and then abandoned? Is there a link between his death and the interviews in which he exposed the government’s conduct? And who was behind the threats and pressure mentioned in his final tweet?
Call for probe
These questions remain unanswered as calls grow for an impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding Satyapal Malik’s death.
