BANJUL, Gambia: The Gambian military arrested former brigadier general Bora Colley, a key figure linked to the notorious “Junglers” paramilitary unit under former dictator Yahya Jammeh.
The Junglers are infamously accused of extrajudicial killings and torture, as documented by the United Nations and various human rights organizations.
Colley voluntarily surrendered to the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) Military Police at Yundum Barracks, located near the capital, Banjul. His arrest followed surveillance operations conducted by intelligence services at his Banjul residence.
Colley is now in custody and assisting the Military Police with ongoing investigations. His arrest aligns with the Gambian government’s broader efforts to address human rights abuses committed during Jammeh’s 22-year rule. In 2022, the government accepted a commission’s recommendations to prosecute 70 individuals, including Jammeh, for crimes committed under his regime.
Jammeh, who seized power through a coup in 1994, was defeated in the 2016 presidential election by opposition leader Adama Barrow. After his loss, Jammeh fled to Equatorial Guinea in January 2017, where he eventually relinquished power.
