Foreign Minister, Mexico City Mayor Resign to Run for President

MEXICO CITY: Mexico’s foreign minister and the capital Mexico City ‘s mayor both resigned on Monday to focus on running for president in June 2024 vote, with the incumbent leftist party favored to win.

The foeign minister Marcelo Ebrard and Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum announced within minutes of each other that they were quitting  as they are trying to become the Morena party’s candidate to succeed President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador next year.

The Bulgarian and Lithuanian descent, Sheinbaum, 60, said that she wanted to be the first female in the country’s history to lead the fate of Mexico. Her resignation would take effect on Friday.

Ebrard announced last week that he would be resigning from the foreign ministry and made it official on Monday in a meeting with the president.

Ebrard, 63, said that he would dedicate himself to another very important task from today, referring to the work of carrying on with Lopez Obrador’s leftist policies.

Morena party to choose candidate for presidential race

The Morena party would choose its candidate through a national vote over the lengthy course of several days in late August and early September.

Sheinbaum has been mayor of Mexico’s capital since 2018. If she wins, she would become the first female to govern Mexico, the Latin America’s second largest economy after Brazil.
