ISLAMABAD:  The foreign dignitaries have started to arrive in Islamabad to participate in an all-important session of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

A four-member delegation of India, a 76-member team of Russia and a 13-member delegation of China have already arrived in Islamabad.

Meanwhile, the two-member delegation of Iran and the four-member delegation of Kyrgyzstan have also reached for the SCO moot. The SCO summit would take place on October 15 and 16 in the federal capital.

According to the foreign office spokesperson, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would preside over the SCO meeting.

The prime ministers of China, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan would represent their countries in the session. Iran’s Vice President and foreign minister of India would come to Pakistan to attend the conference.

The foreign office has said the PM would also hold separate meetings with the representatives of the participating countries to discuss issues including economy and climate.

It is pertinent to mention that authorities are implementing extensive security measures in Islamabad ahead of the SCO summit in response to recent violence and political unrest.

The SCO, which comprises China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus, serves as a platform for discussing regional security, trade, and humanitarian issues.

The summit is particularly significant given the current geopolitical climate, with China’s ambitions regarding Taiwan and Russia’s military actions in Ukraine leading to heightened tensions with the US and its allies.

To ensure security, authorities have declared a three-day public holiday for Islamabad and the neighboring city of Rawalpindi, implementing road closures and limiting movement around key areas.
