ISLAMABAD/SAN SALVADOR: More than 2,000 security personnel were deployed in two districts in Salvador as part of a crackdown on drug gangs.
President Nayib Bukele issued a statement and said that the Tutunichapa area has been totally surrounded by forces. He said that 1,000 soldiers and 130 police personnel will capture the criminals. He posted that more than 1000 forces and 100 officers have been sent to the area to intensify the operation against the drug gangs.

The president said that following the besieging of Tutunichapa, several drug traffickers would take shelter in La Granjita, another distribution centre, which will also be cleaned up of drug peddlers. The office of the president also shared images regarding the movement of security personnel near Tutunichapa.
Justice Minister Gustavo Villatoro also posted images of anti-narcotics police personnel with drug-sniffing dogs. He said that they were going to extract every criminal from their communities.
Defence Minister Rene Merino said that as many as 23 people have been arrested in Tutunichapa. However, he did not share more details about the gang drug traffickers. He vowed that all drug traffickers and terrorists will be eliminated from the area.
President Bukele had earlier declared a state of emergency to suppress gang violence and sent security personnel to encircle Soyapango. Reports said that 650 suspects had been captured in Soyapango.
The country’s Congress on Thursday extended the state of emergency for another month despite criticism.
