KARACHI: The United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan, Julien Harneis, emphasized that the scale of challenges remains significant and that progress in flood funding for Pakistan is on the right track.
During a discussion on the Sustainable Development Goals Dialogue at the Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Monday, Harneis acknowledged the enormity of challenges facing Pakistan, particularly the millions of people affected by the 2022 floods.
He pointed out that the International Conference on Climate Resilient Pakistan, jointly hosted by the Government of Pakistan and the United Nations (UN) in Geneva, pledged a substantial sum of over $9 billion to support both the people and government of Pakistan.
Harneis conveyed the UN’s commitment to maintaining an active role and remarked, “Everybody wants to get things faster.”
Floods Displace 2.5 Million in Pakistan
The Resident Coordinator underscored the importance of the UN’s ongoing collaboration with Pakistan in tackling challenges. He noted that the floods had displaced around 2.5 million people, and comprehensive efforts were being undertaken to provide housing solutions for them.
Harneis revealed that the UN’s itinerary involved visiting 12 Pakistani cities, with Hyderabad and Sukkur lined up after Karachi, and the journey extending until the final destination.
Highlighting the UN’s mission, Harneis reiterated their commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to eradicate poverty and promote global prosperity by the year 2030.
