WASHINGTON: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has said that air traffic operations are beginning to resume following the outage that grounded millions of flights across the US on Wednesday.

FAA said that the ground stop, which forced a halt to all US departing flights, has been lifted and it will continue to investigate what caused the glitch.

A ground stop is an aviation control measure that grounds or slows aircraft at a given airport.

Speaking to reporters a little earlier, US President Joe Biden said the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) doesn’t yet know what caused the issue but that he’ll be told when any new developments are made.

“They expect that in a couple of hours, they’ll have a good sense of what caused it and we’ll respond at that time.”

Flights grounded across US

A major system outage has disrupted air traffic across the US, grounding millions of passengers and stalling operations at some of the world’s busiest airports.

The advice from airports to passengers? Check with your airline for up-to-date information.

“Check flight status with your airline before heading to the airport,” is the advice from JFK Airport in New York City, where 115 airlines operate from.

This is echoed by the other busiest hubs in the US, including LAX Airport in Los Angeles, O’Hare in Chicago, and Washington Dulles Airport.

Departures have not resumed from any airports just yet – bar Newark in New Jersey and Atlanta Airport – but the FAA says it expects flights to resume at 09:00 Eastern Time (14:00 GMT).
