MANILA: At least five people were killed by flash floods and landslides in the city of Zamboanga, south of the Philippines.

A spokesperson for the local disaster response agency said that four people were killed because of the landslides, while another person drowned.

Friday night’s heavy rains triggered the landslides and caused floods. The officials reported that at least 4,000 families were affected by the natural disaster.

Zamboanga is one of five regions in Mindanao affected by massive floods and landslides over the weekend, affecting more than 60,000 families.

Meanwhile, the national government has assured more assistance to flood-hit areas in Mindanao. The assurance came from Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian who visited the Mindanao areas affected by floods on Sunday.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) said that all bridges in the most affected flood areas along Narciso Ramos Highway that links the provinces of Maguindanao and Lanao were passable.

After the flooding on July 9, another heavy rain hit the provinces of Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte and Sarangani on July 12, causing rivers to overflow and flooding low-lying communities, and farmlands.
