BAHAWALPUR: Flash flood has wreaked havoc in the Sutlej River belt after floodwater entered in rural areas, devastating standing crops on thousands of acres of land and forcing thousands of people to dislocate from their homes.
The sources in the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said that the water inflow at Mailsi Saifan was registered at 146,000 cusecs and at Empress Bridge Bahawalpur at 130,000 cusecs. Many Zamindara embankments on the Sutlej River had broken after the river received high-level floodwater as neighbouring India had released more water into the Sutlej River.
Floodwater had reportedly entered the villages of Lal Suhanra, including Patan, Nira Bonga, Basti Ramazan, Chela Basti and others. Floodwater has also entered Baqir Pur, Goth, Waslan and others located close to Emperss Bridge Bahawalpur and Adam Wahn area. Thousands of people were forced to leave while floodwater devastated standing crops of cotton and maze on thousands of acres of land.
The floodwater has also entered the villages of Tehsil Ahmadpur East, located in the river belt area. Tens of hundreds of people fled their homes in order to move to safer areas. Standing crops on thousands of acres of land have also been devastated.
DC Bahawalpur Inspects Flood Situation
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Bahawalpur Zaheer Anwar Jappa visited river belt areas in Mauza Khanowali, Sama Satta and inspected the situation. He said that all available resources were being utilized to provide relief and rescue to people hit by floodwater in river belt areas.
So far, floodwater has hit a few rural areas of the river belt of the Sutlej River. Thousands of people have been safely shifted to safer areas, DC said.
He added that dozens of flood relief camps had been set up for people being hit by floodwater in river belt areas, and the district management had been monitoring the situation round the clock.
