WASHINGTON: The US Defense Department said on Sunday that five American personnel were killed on Friday when their airplane crashed into the Mediterranean Sea during a training flight. In a statement, the officials stated, “We can ultimately confirm that the aircraft incursion was purely related to training and there are no signs of hostile activity.”
Earlier, military officials said on Saturday that a US military airplane had gone down over the eastern Mediterranean Sea. In a statement, the US European Command confirmed the development and said that the aircraft crashed while performing training operations in the area. However, the statement said that there are no signs of any hostile action involved.

The officials said that out of respect for the families suffered, no other information and news would be released on crews involved. AP reported that it was not yet clear what military service the airplane belonged to. It added the US Air Force had also sent additional troops to the area and the USS Gerald R.
