The collapse occurred on Fida Hussain Shaikha Road in Lyari’s Baghdadi neighbourhood. Rescue operations are ongoing, with teams from Sindh’s Rescue 1122 and Baghdadi police working to recover those trapped under the rubble.
The injured include two men and three women, identified as Rashid Aziz (25), Santia Chaitan (30), Chanda Jumma, Yousaf Subhan (50), and Fatima Babo (55).
Hazardous buildings
The incident follows a recent partial collapse in Karachi’s Kharadar area, which caused no casualties. In April, a 10-year-old girl died when a building collapsed in Bhains Colony.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has called for an urgent report on the incident and ordered immediate rescue and medical assistance. He also instructed the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) to identify all hazardous buildings across Karachi and ensure preventive action is taken. “Human life must be the top priority; negligence will not be tolerated,” he said.
Coordinated relief operations
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori expressed sorrow over the tragedy and directed authorities to carry out coordinated relief operations, warning against any form of negligence.
Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani demanded that SBCA and other relevant bodies promptly investigate and report the cause of the collapse. He also urged that all barriers around the site be removed to speed up rescue efforts.
