BEIJING: At least five people have been killed and 13 others injured as a young man drove his car into pedestrians in Guangzhou city of China, on Wednesday evening during rush hours.
Chinese police arrested the man driving a car into a pedestrian crowd.
The incident has sparked widespread public outrage, and many accused the man of deliberately targeting people.
Videos posted online show the young driver getting out of the car and throwing banknotes into the air shortly after the crash.
Chinese media published images of the accident showing victims lying on the ground and the suspect appearing to throw handfuls of banknotes in the air before being arrested.
Guangzhou police arrest suspect
“Police took the driver for questioning, and the accident is currently the subject of a thorough investigation,” said the head of Guangzhou police on the Chinese social network Weibo.
The suspected driver is a 22-year-old man surnamed Wen, hailing from another city in the same province of Guangdong. Police detained the man and launched an investigation.
The crash took place on Wednesday during the evening rush hour at a busy junction in the southern city of 19 million.
There have been similar recent incidents. In February 2022, a driver ploughed a mini truck into people in the southern province of Fujian, killing three and injuring nine.
A witness surnamed Liu said he saw a black BMW car rush to the junction near the Zhengjia Plaza, and the driver didn’t stop but escaped after knocking down pedestrians.
Earlier this week, a hotel guest in Shanghai deliberately drove his car into the lobby following an argument with staff. Nobody was injured in that incident.
