DOHA: Although many supporters were against the idea of the FIFA World Cup in the Middle Eastern country, Qatar, where authorities have highly restricted the sale of Alcohol, however for female fans, the alcohol ban has made the tournament a safer experience.
An ambassador for the campaign to counter sexism in football called HerGameToo, Molloson said that her father was so worried that he accompanied her to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar to ensure her safety, but now she did not need his services as she felt safe in the Middle Eastern country due to ban on Alcohol.
She said that the ban on Alcohol had resulted in a less exhaustive atmosphere around the games at FIFA World Cup 2022.
“I think alcohol result in a bit more to hostility, rather than things like sexual harassment, catcalling, and wolf whistling,” she maintained.
FIFA World Cup in safe atmosphere
Another female fan of football said she was nervous about travelling to Qatar as she had no idea what to expect in the Middle East.
“The atmosphere here is really nice for females, I am a staunch fan of football, and when I was in my country I thought Qatar maybe is a country for only men, and was worried that the country maybe not safe for women but no, I was wrong, I am very safe here,” she added.
In Qatar, Alcohol is available in some hotels and bars, but conspicuous low consumption is usually seen at the world’s biggest football tournament.
