DOHA: Costa Rica secured a vital win over Japan on Sunday with their first shot on target and lead the side to victory in the Group E contest of FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
In their opener, Japan had shocked former champions Germany with 2-1. Spain had hammered Costa Rica with 7-0.
Costa Rica’s victory could be of huge advantage to the Germans team.
Costa Rica’s win left Japan, Spain, and Costa Rica itself all on three points. Spain will take on Germany today in another crucial match.
Japan made five changes to the side which shocked Germany in their opening match.
Japan’s Early Attacks Signaled their Intentions
At Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, from the start, Japan went on the attack and won a corner to signal their intentions.
However, Japan’s early attack went in vain as Costa Rica made the first shot at goal by Costa Rica’s Joel Campbell.
Moriyasu, whose team face Spain in a daunting last-group game, still fancies Japan’s chances of reaching the knockout round.
He denied that his players were tired after their exertions against Germans side and defended making so many changes to his line-up.
