ISLAMABAD: A court in Argentina has sentenced vice-president and former president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner to six years of jail time over corruption charges.

A three-judge panel also imposed a lifelong ban on holding public office on Fernandez who was found guilty in a $1 billion fraud case which involved granting a public works contract to a friend. Meanwhile, the panel rejected a second charge of running a criminal organisation, if found guilty in which, Fernandez’s full sentence could have been extended to 12 years. The verdict marks the first time a serving Argentinian vice president has been convicted of a crime.

Fernandez unlikely to spend jail-time

Fernandez however is unlikely to serve jail time owing to immunity amid her government roles. She is also expected to launch a lengthy appeal process and would continue in her role as the vice-president as the case proceeds through higher courts.

The 69-year-old, who served as Argentina’s president for two terms between 2007 and 2015, said the charges against her were politically motivated. Speaking after the ruling, Fernandez described herself as the victim of a “judicial mafia”. Prior to the verdict, she had also accused the prosecutors of lying and maligning her.
