ISLAMABAD: The Rachid Karami International Fair in Tripoli, Lebanon is on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger, Arab media reported on Friday. It was designed by the renowned late Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer in 1962.  The historical site is a symbol of mid-20th-century modernization in the Lebanese architectural landscape, which has been neglected for decades.

UNESCO’s List of World Heritage

Lebanese architecture expert Dr. Wassim Naghi hoped that it will be a positive measure for this significant site in Tripoli.  Dr. Wassim Naghi told the media that inclusion of the historical site in UNESCO’s List is the best news he hard in the recent past.

He said that the site will attract donors and funds necessary to revive it after the historical site was added in the UNESCO’s List of World Heritage.

Dr. Naghi said that it was something very innovative. He added that they didn’t expect to see this outstanding acrobatic structural system.

The historical site faced several delays and was never actually utilized, primarily down to the outbreak of civil war in Lebanon, during which the fair was also occupied by Palestinian groups and the Syrian Army. Dr. Wassim Naghi added that the site has, somehow, survived, but it remains in “very critical condition,”.

He said, “We might see a total collapse, and that would be a huge loss, not just for Lebanon, but for humanity.”
