WASHINGTON: Walz stated that Trump established the largest trade deficit in U.S. history with China. Walz made the claim during a vice-presidential debate, hosted by CBS News.

According to Reuters news agency, this claim is accurate. It added that the U.S. trade deficit in goods with China hit an all-time high during Trump’s second year in office.  According to a 2019 report from the Commerce Department, the trade gap increased by 11.6% to $419.2 billion in 2018, up from the previous record of $375.5 billion in 2017.

In 2018, the U.S. imposed tariffs on $250 billion worth of goods imported from China, which led Beijing to retaliate with tariffs on $110 billion worth of American products, including soybeans and other commodities.
