ISLAMABAD/GAZA: Several explosions rocked the Gaza Strip on Monday as Israel’s army said it targetted an underground site used by the Palestinian enclave’s Hamas to ‘manufacture small-range rockets’.

The air strikes, in which there had been no immediate words of casualties, followed what Israel armed forces described as its shooting down over the weekend of the rocket fired over the border from Gaza. There has been no Palestinian claim for that launch, according to Reuters.

In the Israeli-occupied West Bank, Palestinian territory, witnesses said that the military had surrounded a house in the city of Nablus, with gunfire ensuing and possible casualties.

The Den of Lions, the group of Palestinian gunmen based primarily in Nablus and nearby Jenin, which has been subject to intensified Israeli army raids over the past year, said it had ambushed the military unit. Israel had no immediate comment.

Gazan factions target

Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007 and has fought many wars with Israel there since then. When smaller Gazan factions target Israel, it retaliates against Hamas.

Palestinian sources said Israeli armed forces fired on Hamas border positions early Monday. Sirens sounded in an Israeli town near the Gaza border, warning of possible fresh rocket launches.
