ISLAMABAD/KYIV: Explosions were heard in the Shevchenkivsky district of Ukraine’s capital Kyiv after what appears to have been a drone attack, mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Wednesday morning.

Klitschko said that air defence shot down 10 “Shahed drones” over the capital and the nearby region, while pointing towards the Iranian-made kamikaze drones that Russia has been accused of using against Ukraine. There was no immediate report of casualties, but the drone debris damaged two administrative buildings, the capital’s military administration said.

Power outages in Kyiv

For weeks Russia has targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with missiles and drones and plunged millions into cold and darkness as winters intensify.

On Monday, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the G7 countries to provide extra gas and weapons to help Ukraine survive a brutal winter and war that risks further suffering for millions in the war-torn country. — AFP/APP
