Explosion Kills 6 Ahead of Ashura in Syria: Officials

DAMASCUS: Local officials said at least 6 people were killed and several wounded in a bomb blast near the Sayeda Zeinab mausoleum in Damascus on Thursday.

AFP reported that the deadly explosion occurred ahead of the annual commemoration of Ashura.

The Syrian Ministry of Interior also confirmed the incident and said that six people were killed and more than 20 injured in the blast.  Local officials said that the incident took place when a motorcycle exploded near a taxi in the area.

However, state media reported that the blast was caused by a “bomb placed in a taxi by unknown people.” As per media reports, the health officials arrived at the site while security forces cordoned off the area after the explosion.

The authorities in the country had tightened security measures around the mausoleum for the 10-day Ashura commemoration.

Earlier, on Tuesday, a blast in a car in the same area injured two people, official media reported.
