KABUL: At least six people were killed and 13 others were injured when a suicide bomber triggered explosives in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, on Monday, police said.

The attack occurred in the Qala-e-Bakhtiar area on Kabul’s southern outskirts, a district that has experienced relative calm in recent months despite threats from militant groups.

The bomber, described by police as wearing explosives on his body, detonated the device in a crowded area. Among those killed was a woman, although her identity has not yet been released. Emergency responders immediately transported the injured to nearby hospitals.

Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran confirmed the details of the explosion via the social media platform X, saying that the wounded are receiving medical attention. “The injured were transferred to hospitals on time and investigations are ongoing,” Zadran stated.

Despite a noticeable decrease in overall violence since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, the country remains vulnerable to attacks from various militant factions. The regional chapter of the Islamic State (IS), known for its extremist activities, has continued to pose a significant threat. Although no group has yet claimed responsibility for Monday’s bombing, IS has previously targeted Kabul and other Afghan cities.

The Taliban authorities have been criticized for downplaying or delaying reports on attacks. The last major suicide bombing claimed by IS occurred in March in Kandahar, the Taliban’s traditional stronghold, where reports of fatalities varied significantly between official and medical sources.

Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, in a statement to AFP last month, said that the Islamic State had been effectively suppressed under their rule. “No such groups exist here that can pose a threat to anyone,” Mujahid declared.
