Explosion at Fireworks Warehouse Kills Twelve in Thailand

BANGKOK: Twelve people were killed and more than one hundred wounded when firecrackers kept in a warehouse exploded in Thailand.

The firecrackers exploded on Saturday night at the unauthorized warehouse at the Muno market in district Su-ngai Kolok, southern province of Narathiwat bordering Malaysia, according to Narathiwat’s Governor Sanan Phongaksorn.

He said that 12 people were killed including to two unidentified persons. The remains of the unidentified persons were sent for DNA checks.

Sanan said that 121 people were wounded, two severely injured, while 111 had been discharged from hospital. He hoped there should be no more deaths.

Explosion affets houses

He said that more than two hundred houses near the warehouse were damaged by the blast, affecting at least 365 people. Nineteen people were still staying at a shelter as many families have shifted to their relatives’ houses.

Police were probing the cause of the explosion, he said, with initial reports doubting a welding error at the warehouse.
