ISLAMABAD: Experts have called for developing comprehensive and multi-faceted strategies to improve the access of young mothers and their families to reproductive healthcare services.

Lower social status of women and lack of available information and services on family planning contribute to reproductive health challenges for women, particularly adolescent mothers, the experts underscored while addressing the members of a media coalition, comprised of media persons from all provinces and representing all major media houses of Pakistan, the Population Council said in a press release issued on Wednesday.

The meeting was jointly organised by the Population Council and UNFPA, to mark the forthcoming International Women’s Day in which media persons were briefed on the reproductive health needs of young women in the country.

The meeting noted that youth, in particular, were at risk of experiencing poor reproductive health in Pakistan, which is linked to adverse consequences such as pregnancy complications, early childbearing and parenthood, and maternal death and disability.

The moot also drew a comparison between the status of reproductive health of adolescents in Pakistan and other regional countries. Media’s role in highlighting the issue was also discussed at length during the meeting.

Media coalition of Population Council focuses on health and family planning issues besides the cross-sectoral impact of the rapid population growth to raise awareness as well as hold governments accountable for service delivery with regard to family planning and provision of information.
