ISLAMABAD: Today, October 10, marks World Mental Health Day, prompting psychiatrists to raise awareness about the severe consequences of the silence surrounding mental health issues and highlighting the urgent need for collective action to educate people on adopting healthy lifestyles, as mental health concerns continue to escalate.
Talking to media reports, renowned psychiatrist Dr. Nargis Asad from Agha Khan Hospital emphasized the importance of breaking down barriers to mental health care. She stated that dismantling the stigma and lack of awareness preventing individuals from seeking help is crucial.
“We must educate communities about mental health, normalize conversations, and foster empathy,” she emphasized. Dr. Nargis stressed the need to prioritize mental health equity, ensuring that everyone has access to quality care, regardless of their background, socioeconomic status, or location.
She also highlighted that timely diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses are essential in preventing disorders and related issues. Unfortunately, she noted that major challenges in mental healthcare include delayed treatment due to a lack of awareness, misconceptions, and stigma surrounding mental health problems.
“The delayed treatment can have devastating consequences,” Dr. Nargis warned. “Untreated mental illnesses can lead to severe symptoms, strained relationships, decreased productivity, and even suicidal tendencies.”
“It is important that we confront these issues directly,” she added. “Millions of people in Pakistan struggle with mental health issues, yet many remain undiagnosed and untreated.” According to Dr. Nargis, “the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that more than 20 million Pakistanis suffer from mental disorders, with depression and anxiety being the most prevalent.”
