WASHINGTON, United States: Mike Pence, former US vice president, Friday said he would not endorse his former boss Donald Trump for a second term in the White House.
“It should come as no surprise that I will not be endorsing Donald Trump this year,” estranged Pence stated in an interview with Fox News.
US media termed the statement a “bombshell” and “startling,” although in fact, deep divisions have led the two men apart since end of Trump’s tenure, and an endorsement would have been a surprise.
The two have been estranged since President Trump allegedly pushed Pence to overturn his 2020 presidential defeat to Joe Biden and attacked Pence on social media when he did not follow his plan.
After efforts by President Trump and his allies to overturn the election results failed, the then-president asked his of supporters to march on the Capitol, some chanting, “Hang Mike Pence!”
The former US vice president told the interviewer that Trump was “pursuing and articulating an agenda that is at odds with the conservative agenda that we governed on during our four years.”
