N’DJAMENA: Former opposition leader in Chad, Succes Masra has been appointed as prime minister of the transitional government in the country, the presidency said on Monday.
Masra has recently returned to Chad after a deal with the ruling junta.
His appointment could be seen as a move by the military rulers to appease the opposition following a constitutional referendum in which most opposition parties have either called for a boycott or a “no” vote.
Masra, an opponent of the ruling junta which seized power in April 2021, fled the African state after dozens were killed and hundreds wounded in security forces crack down on demonstrations in the capital N’Djamena on October 2022.

The government issued an international arrest warrant after he left. However, in late October the government and Masra signed an agreement permitting his return.
His appointment was announced in a decree read on national television.
However, several opposition parties have distanced themselves from Masra and criticized the general amnesty that the regime has granted for all Chadians, involved in the events of the October 2022 protest.
