STOCKHOLM: European Union foreign policy head Josep Borrell has called for European countries to provide long-range arms for Kyiv to assist it in countering Russian attacks while hurrying weapons deliveries overall.

Borrell said following a meeting with Ukraine’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba,“ The Russian army is bombing from far away so the people of Ukraine have to also the ability to reach… the same range, distance,”.

“But we have to accelerate,” he added, as Germany said a new arms package for Kyiv worth 2.7 billion euros, including armored vehicles, tanks, and air-defense systems. Borrell maintained, “I welcome the efforts of Germany and invite all member nations to follow this example,”.

On Thursday, the UK said it would send its Storm Shadow missiles to Kyiv, becoming the first nation to provide longer-range arms to Ukraine.

Ukraine’s President Zelensky has been asking Western partners to provide more advanced arms ahead of a widely expected counter-offensive against Russian forces in eastern Ukraine.

“The main points of my conversation with European Union foreign ministers today will be short-range and long-range artillery ammunition accession talks” to join the European Union, Kuleba added.

President Zelensky is seeking to speed up the process for formal dialogue on EU membership for Kyiv in the wake of Russia’s attack, launched in 2022.
