BRUSSELS: The European Union’s credibility is in danger following allegations Qatar lavished gifts and cash on European Parliament officials to influence decision-making, EU foreign ministers warned on Monday.

On Monday, Greece froze the assets of the vice president in the European Parliament, Eva Kaili, a key suspect in the case and one of the four people arrested and charged in Belgium.

Eva Kaili’s office did not respond to a question about the development. Qatar has also denied any wrongdoing in the graft case.

Irish Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney also voiced her concern and termed the incident damaging. “We need to investigate and get to the bottom of the case.”

A Qatari official denied the weekend allegations of possible misconduct. A Qatari official said the reported claims of the Qatari government’s association with the accusations are baseless and extremely misinformed.
