AMSTERDAM: The Saudi Arabian Handball Federation has announced the appointment of Erlingur Richardsson from Iceland and Edwin Kippers from the Netherlands as the new coaches for the men’s senior national handball team.

Having previously worked together for the Netherlands men’s national handball team from 2017 to 2022, the duo managed to elevate the team’s ranking from 20th to the top 10 in the world. This collaboration marks their first coaching experience outside of Europe.

Erlingur Richardsson and Edwin Kippers are set to officially assume their roles on September 1, facing an immediate challenge as the Asian Games, scheduled in China, are set to begin on September 24. In addition to this, their short-term goals encompass preparations for the 2024 Olympic Games qualifications and the upcoming World Cup.

“We have to make sure we get a better balance,” Kippers said, referring to their strategy of nurturing both the existing senior players and the younger generation.

Kippers acknowledged the potential of the Saudi national handball team, expressing his hope to develop that potential further. He emphasized the positive spirit among the Saudi players and their dedication to representing their country.

Damman a Handball Hub in Saudi Arabia

The coaches have already begun immersing themselves in the Saudi handball scene. Kippers arrived in Dammam, which he identified as a significant hub for handball in Saudi Arabia. Despite having limited familiarity with Saudi handball, Kippers dedicated his summer to comprehensive research and game observation.

As he became more acquainted with the Saudi handball environment, Kippers expressed optimism about the future. He noted the increasing popularity of handball in the Kingdom and highlighted the growing involvement of top players in the Saudi League.

Kippers also praised the camaraderie among handball players worldwide and commended the welcoming and hospitable nature of the Saudi people. His initial impressions of Saudi Arabia have exceeded his expectations, and he looks forward to contributing to the development of the sport in the country.
