BRUSSELS: The European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen said Wednesday that EU plans to host a donors conference in next month to mobilize international aid and assistance Turkiye and for Syria after this week’s devastating earthquake.
Ursula von der Leyen wrote on Twitter that they are racing against the clock in order to save lives. The EU chief added that they will provide aid, together soon. She added Syria and Turkiye can count on the EU.
EU to host conference in Marach
The EU said the donors conference would be organized in early March in Brussels in coordination with Turkish officials to mobilize funds and aid from the world in support for the people Syria and Turkiye.
The EU chief said in a statement that no one should be left alone in such like tragedy. The conference is aimed at coordinating the world response to the crisis and “will be open to member states of EU, neighboring nations, UN members” and international investors, the statement said.

Sweden will co-chair the donor conference in next month. Swedish prime minister Ulf Kristersson said that Sweden wants to provide EU’s help to meet the need of the Syrian and Turkish people in this terrible time,”.
The EU was swift to send rescue teams and workers to Turkiye following the massive 7.8-magnitude quake struck the country.
On Wednesday, Syria made an official request to the EU for assistance, the alliance’s commissioner for crisis management said.
