WARSAW: Unilateral action on trade by European Union (EU) nations is not acceptable, the alliance’s executive said on Sunday, following Hungary and Poland announced bans on grain and food imports from Kyiv to protect their domestic agricultural sectors.

EU expresses concern after Hungary, Poland ban Ukrainian grain

Following Moscow’s invasion blocked some Black Sea ports, large quantities of Ukrainian food items and grain, which is cheaper than that generated in the European Union (EU), ended up staying in Central European nations due to logistical blockages, high prices and sales for domestic farmers.

The European Union (EU) has rejected Hungary’s ban on the import of food items and grains from Ukraine.

In a statement, the European Union spokesperson said that no member nations can devise its own policy.

After the Poland, Hungary’s government which is also a part of the European Union (EU), has also announced to prohibit the import of grains and food products from Ukraine. Similarly, Hungary’s government has also implemented a ban on Ukrainian exports.

Earlier, the Prime Minister’s office in Poland has said that the aim of the ban is to protect their agricultural market from instability.

On the other hand, Hungary’s government has claimed that due to the European Union’s (EU) lack of targeted steps and the presence of low-quality food products from Kyiv, the introduction of the provisional ban was necessary.

Some media reports suggest that the farmers of some European Union (EU) member nations also expressed concerns for import of the Ukrainian grains and other commodities.
