BRUSSELS, Belgium: European Union (EU) leaders have agreed to start negotiations with Bosnia on joining the bloc, but “hard work” lies ahead for the country to move forward, EU chief Charles Michel said Thursday.

“Congratulations! Your place is in our European family. Today’s decision is a key step forward on your EU path,” the Michel wrote on X, as leaders met at a Brussels summit.

The leaders discussed new ways to boost Ukraine’s arms and ammunition production amid a renewed sense of crisis over the war-torn country’s future.

Ukraine’s ammunition inventory is extremely low, while Russia has an army with more and better weapons. There is also a growing awareness that the EU must ensure its own security, as election campaigns in the US raise questions about Washington’s commitment to its allies.

European Council President Charles Michel said ahead of the Brussels summit that European countries are facing a “crucial moment.” He said that while Europe is facing its biggest security threat since World War II”, they must take fundamental and concrete steps to improve defence situation and put the EU economy on a “war footing”.
