ISLAMABAD: The European Union has urged immediate de-escalation following a sharp rise in attacks between Pakistan and Afghanistan, warning that the latest cross-border incidents could have serious consequences for regional stability.
In a statement issued by the High Representative on behalf of the EU, the bloc called on all parties to halt hostilities after reports of cross-border attacks and strikes.
“We call on all actors for immediate de-escalation and a halt to hostilities,” the statement said, expressing concern over the growing volatility along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
The EU reiterated its longstanding position that Afghan soil must not be used to threaten or launch attacks against other countries. It also urged the Afghan interim authorities to take “effective action against all terrorist groups operating in or from Afghanistan.”
Islamabad has repeatedly voiced concerns over militant groups using Afghan territory to target Pakistan, particularly amid a recent surge in cross-border violence. Pakistani officials have maintained that durable peace in the region depends on concrete measures to curb terrorism.
The EU further encouraged both sides to resolve tensions through dialogue and diplomatic engagement. It stressed that international law, including international humanitarian law, must be respected by all actors.
The bloc underscored the need to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, calling for all feasible precautions to prevent further civilian casualties as tensions remain high.
