SANAA: The European Union has asked the Houthi rebels of Yemen to engage in a positive manner with UN efforts to help resolve the crisis in the conflict-hit country.
The French Embassy in Yemen released the European Union Council’s statement which stated that the group (European Union) wants the Houthis to negotiate in a constructive manner and stop taking non-negotiable stances on the issue while holding discussions with United Nations Special Envoy (UNSE).At present, Sweden’s diplomat Hans Grunberg has been appointed as the UN’s special envoy to bring peace to Yemen.
EU seeks extension of ceasefire in Yemen
The European Union Council reiterated its statement that did not negate the European group’s stance on Yemen’s territorial integrity, unity, independence, and sovereignty in addition to supporting UN peace efforts and Grundberg’s efforts of mediation. The press note added that the European Union highlighted why it is necessary to extend the ceasefire after reinstating it.
Yemen’s warring rivals, the government and Houthi rebels, were unable failed to extend the cessation of hostilities that was previously mediated by the UN. Both sides blamed each other for launching attacks.The country’s civil war started in September 2014 which has resulted in millions risking starvation. – APP
